چکیده

In addition to a fast electromagnetic pulse (EMP), a high altitude nuclear burst produces a relatively slow magnetohydrodynarnic EMP (MHD EMP), whose effects are like those from solar storm geomagnetically induced currents (SS-GIC). The MHD EMP electric field E < 10 V/m and lasts < 10 sec, whereas for solar storms E > 10 V/m and lasts >10 sec. Although the solar storm electric field is lower than MHD EMP, the solar storm effects are generally greater due to their much longer duration. Substorms produce much smaller effects than SS-GIC, but occur much more frequently. This paper describes the physics of such geomagnetic disturbances and analyzes their effects.

The transition to continuous unloading: Di erentiating storms and substorms in magnetospheric dynamics

We present a new paradigm for the driving of storms and substorms. Using a model that tracks the major energy components of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system, we demonstrate that both storms and substorms can be obtained from the same dynamical system for di erent levels of forcing. To say that storms are made up of substorms would be incorrect. Instead we see that periodic substorms result f...

Terrestrial agents in the realm of space storms: Missions study oxygen ions

Observations from two recent space missions, the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers (AMPTE) and the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES), demonstrated that magnetospheric O + ions originating in the ionosphere are important terrestrial agents in geospace. In other words, the two missions showed that ionized oxygen escaping from the upper atmosphere, can play a c...

Theory for explosive ideal magnetohydrodynamic instabilities in plasmas.

Flux tubes confined in tokamaks are observed to erupt explosively in some plasma disruptions and edge localized modes. Similar eruptions occur in astrophysical plasmas, for example, in solar flares and magnetospheric substorms. A single unifying nonlinear evolution equation describing such behavior in both astrophysical and tokamak plasmas is derived. This theory predicts that flux tubes rise e...

Long-term variations in the plasma sheet ion composition and substorm occurrence over 23 years

The Geotail satellite has been operating for almost two solar cycles (~23 years) since its launch in July 1992. The satellite carries the energetic particle and ion composition (EPIC) instrument that measures the energetic ion flux (9.4– 212 keV/e) and enables the investigation of long-term variations of the ion composition in the plasma sheet for solar cycles 22–24. From the statistical analys...

Response of plasmaspheric configuration to substorms revealed by Chang’e 3

The Moon-based Extreme Ultraviolet Camera (EUVC) of the Chang'e 3 mission provides a global and instantaneous meridian view (side view) of the Earth's plasmasphere. The plasmasphere is one inner component of the whole magnetosphere, and the configuration of the plasmasphere is sensitive to magnetospheric activity (storms and substorms). However, the response of the plasmaspheric configuration t...
